Abstract
Background Phoenix sylvestris have various phytochemicals. It has been reported that the other parts of plant have free radical scavenging activity. However, antidiabetic activity of Phoenix sylvestris seeds extract is not well studied. Objective: This study was conducted with an objective to evaluate the antidiabetic activity of Phoenix sylvestris seeds. Material and Method: Antidiabetic activity of Phoenix sylvestris seeds extract was assessed by streptozotocin induced diabetes model in rat. Animals were divided into control, diabetic control, Test I (200 mg/kg body weight), Test II (500 mg/kg body weight) and standard (glibenclamide 5mg/kg) treated groups with 5 animals in each groups. The biochemical parameters (SGOT, SGPT, LDL, HDL, cholesterol and triglycerides were measured, and histopathological evaluation of pancreas of all the above treatment group was carried out. Result: Streptozotocin induced diabetes model showed that hydro alcoholic extract of Phoenix sylvestris seeds and standard treated animals exhibited a significant reduction in the blood glucose level as compare to control groups over the period of 14 days (P < 0.01) and in biochemical parameters (P < 0.05, 0.001). Histopathology of P. sylvestris seeds extract and standard treated groups showed more islet cells. Conclusion: The present study shows the antidiabetic effect of P.sylvestris seeds extract.
