The relationship between India and Bhutan is unique in South Asia, based on shared history, culture, and geography. Key aspects of their relations, such as the 1949 Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, economic ties, security cooperation, and future challenges and prospects, are explored in this paper. Historically, Bhutan was a British protectorate until 1949, and the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation established mutual respect for sovereignty, non-aggression, peaceful dispute resolution, and consultation on foreign affairs. This laid the foundation for stable relations and cooperation. Economically, India is Bhutan's largest trading partner, with a focus on hydropower, trade, investment, agriculture, and tourism. Both countries collaborate on border management and counter-terrorism to enhance security in the region. Challenges include Bhutan's high hydropower debt to India, infrastructure development needs, and the impact of climate change. Despite these challenges, the prospects for the India-Bhutan relationship remain positive, with opportunities to strengthen cooperation and promote peace and prosperity in the region. In conclusion, the India-Bhutan relationship serves as a model for bilateral cooperation in South Asia. By building on their strong partnership and addressing challenges together, both countries can further solidify their ties and contribute to regional stability and development.
