Abstract
This study arises from the urgent need to preserve and revitalize indigenous cultural heritage, particularly under the pressures of globalization and cultural homogenization. The Bagobo tribe, known for its rich myths and traditions, faces the risk of cultural erosion. By exploring and documenting these mythological narratives through a Cultural Studies framework, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Bagobo's cultural beliefs and practices. This understanding is academically significant and vital for the community's efforts to maintain and transmit their heritage to future generations. Using a Cultural Studies framework as defined by Hall (1960) and Storey (2010), the study qualitatively examines six selected mythological stories from the Bagobo tribe, including narratives like The Origin of Bagobo, The Sun and the Moon, and Lumabat and Mebuyan. The research addresses two main questions: it explores the beliefs embedded in Bagobo mythologies and assesses how these belief systems influence the contemporary lives of the Bagobo community in Barangay Soong, Davao del Sur. The findings reveal enduring mythological themes such as migration, interaction with the gods, gender preferences, recognition of heaven and the underworld, fate and celestial influence, nature connection, and values of acceptance. The study emphasizes the need for proactive measures to safeguard and revitalize these at-risk belief systems, calling for meaningful initiatives to protect and celebrate the Bagobo's rich cultural legacy.
