Abstract

An individual’s perception plays a pivotal role in the success or failure of a programme. It has been observed through various scientific studies that many rural development programs resulted in failure because of the poor/unfavourable perception of the persons involved in the implementation of the programme. “Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman” (PM Poshan) Scheme earlier known as Mid-Day Meal Scheme has been actively operating the state of Himachal Pradesh for the last about three decades i.e. from August 15, 1995. However, the extent to which the scheme is being effectively implemented or working depends on the perception of the stake holders involved in the scheme particularly the teachers-in-charge of the scheme. Keeping this in view, the present study entitled “Teachers’ Perception on their Socio-Psychological Traits – A Study of Mandi District of Himachal Pradesh” was undertaken to determine the perception of the teachers towards their socio-psychological characteristics. The data collected from 75 school teachers selected randomly from 15 schools of Balh block of Mandi district (HP) revealed that a majority of the respondents were graduates/post- graduates with rural family background and teaching experience of ten years. They have moderate perception on Self Confidence, Scientific Orientation, Management Orientation, Decision Making Ability and Leadership Skills. However, there were still 14 to 24 percent of the respondents who had low perception on the above-mentioned socio-psychological traits which need to be improved by organizing short duration practical training and orientation programs for them.
