Abstract

Risks in life are understood as problems, losses, catastrophes or experiences having undesirable effects and outcomes. The present article focuses on understanding risk in the context of criminal/ offending behavior. The risks involved in criminal behavior have multiple negative outcomes impacting the legal, social, financial and behavioral aspects of an individual. However, a criminal’s understanding and assessment of risk often involves experiences like peer elevation, monetary benefit, less chances of conviction, thrilling opportunities of crime, and learning more about crime. Risks of aggression and impulsiveness are studied because they seem to contribute to a large extent on offending acts such as theft or property and narcotic offenses. 83% of the participants of this study claimed to have committed crime along with others. The results have shown that repetition of crime is also likely to occur where new crimes are continued to be committed along with other criminals as a joint venture. Criminal skills such as violent crimes, property/theft, drug peddling appear to be 23.3%, 27%, and 30% respectively. Multiple cases and sections imposed by judiciary is shown a significance of association value (0.05) between number of times crime committed and type of crime. If the risks are not mitigated with suitable interventions, offending acts and activities grow and multiply.
