Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding provides essential nutrients and antibodies crucial for an infant's development and immune system. Understanding the current practices in breastfeeding and weaning helps identify areas where improvements can be made to enhance infant health outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other health bodies recommend exclusive breastfeeding is done for first 6 months followed by introduction of complementary feeding along with breastfeeds till the age of 2 years Objective: To find out the perception and practices of breastfeeding and weaning practices among mothers with infants in the age group 9-12 months. Methodology: Study Design: Cross-sectional analytical, Study Place: Krishna Hospital and research centre Karad. Study tool: Validated Questionnaire developed by investigators, Study duration: 6 months (for data collection and analysis). Study Subjects: Mothers coming to the immunization clinics with infants around 9-12months of age. Inclusion criteria: Women having children between 9-12 months of age. Exclusion Criteria: Children diagnosed with inborn metabolic disorders, diabetes, heart diseases, congenital malformations and infants who are on special feeds or diets. Results: Majority of participants (33%) initiated weaning at the age of 6-7 months, the earliest being 5 months (10%) and 6% could not initiate weaning till the age of 12 months. Most common weaning food was dal, rice with ghee (29%).60% use plastic bottles for feeding from which 36% use bottles for giving water to infants.27% didn’t feed colostrum. The most common hunger cue was crying (98%) whereas least common was mouth opening (9%).The incorrect practices which were followed by them were, late initiation of breastfeeding due to which colostrum was not given to the neonate, incorrect breastfeeding technique i.e. giving little milk from each side of the breast without emptying one breast completely, late or no initiation of weaning foods, less quantity of weaning food than the amount required for the infant according to the nutritional demand. Conclusion: Initiation of early breastfeeding and continuing breastfeeds along with complimentary feeds is essential for the optimal growth of the infant
