Abstract
Youth poverty remains a critical issue in Nigeria, rendering young people vulnerable to challenges related to education and employment. This paper examines the multifaceted causes of youth poverty in the Nigerian context, focusing on the impact of polygamy, early marriages, lack of marketable skills, illiteracy, and insufficient documentation of asset ownership. Drawing on comprehensive research and analysis, this study delves into the root causes of each factor and their intricate interplay. Polygamy, rooted in culture and tradition, is explored as a contributor to youth poverty, affecting households' economic stability and limiting individuals' opportunities for upward mobility. Early marriages, influenced by both legislation and religious practices, perpetuate a cycle of poverty for young girls, compromising their education, health, and overall well-being. The lack of marketable skills emerges as a result of an inadequate educational system, hindering the workforce's ability to meet industry demands and compete in the job market. Illiteracy is identified as a significant impediment to progress, as it fuels vulnerability to radicalization, perpetuates poverty, and limits critical thinking. The absence of proper documentation of asset ownership further exacerbates economic inequality, preventing individuals from accessing capital and participating fully in the economy. To address these challenges, a comprehensive approach is recommended. Solutions encompass legal reforms to curb polygamy and child marriages, bolstering vocational education to enhance marketable skills, implementing literacy programs to empower individuals, and establishing a centralized documentation system for asset ownership. These measures should be accompanied by broader societal changes that challenge prevailing norms, attitudes, and values that perpetuate youth poverty. By comprehensively addressing these underlying factors, Nigeria can foster an environment where young people have greater opportunities for education, employment, and economic advancement. Through concerted efforts across government, civil society, and the private sector, the nation can work towards breaking the cycle of youth poverty and promoting sustainable development for its future generations.
