Abstract
A study was to assess the effectiveness of an information booklet on complications of Diabetes mellitus among patients with Diabetes mellitus at selected hospital, Kolkata. The main purpose of the study is to help patients with Diabetes mellitus to have adequate knowledge about complications of Diabetes mellitus which reduce the occurrence of complications and thereby lead a better quality of life. Objectives of the study are:- 1. To assess the existing level of knowledge on complications of Diabetes mellitus, among patients with Diabetes mellitus. 2. To develop & validate the information booklet on complications of Diabetes mellitus. 3. To determine the effectiveness of information booklet on complications of Diabetes mellitus in terms of gain in knowledge score among patients with Diabetes Mellitus. 4. To find the association between pre test knowledge score on complications of Diabetes mellitus among patients with Diabetes Mellitus with selected demographic variables. Independent variable was- Information booklet on complications of Diabetes mellitus. Dependent variable was- knowledge about complications of Diabetes mellitus among patients with Diabetes mellitus. Conceptual framework based on S-M-C-R model (1949). Initially a review of literature was primarily based on studies related to complications of Diabetes mellitus, studies related to utility of information booklet on patients with Diabetes mellitus and studies related to demography and development of complications of Diabetes mellitus. The research hypothesis aimed at finding the effectiveness of information booklet and association of selected background factors of patients with Diabetes mellitus and pre test knowledge score. An evaluative research approach was used for the study. The research design adopted was the one group pre test and post test research design. The data were collected from 30 patients with Diabetes mellitus using a convenience sampling technique. The tools included in the study were Demographic proforma for selected personal information and a structured knowledge questionnaire which were developed to assess the knowledge on complications of Diabetes mellitus in relation to various aspects. The validity of the tool was established by giving it to nine experts with minor modifications in content and language. The reliability scores obtained for the knowledge score was 0.88. The pilot study was conducted in the Calcutta Medical Research Institute between 16th September, 2011 and 22rd September, 2011. That study was found to be feasible. For main study data were collected from patients with Diabetes mellitus who attended The Medica Super Speciality Hospital, Kolkata. Data obtained were edited, organized, analyzed and interpreted by descriptive and inferential statistics. The significant findings of the study were based on the data based on the background factors of patients with Diabetes mellitus and the data on effectiveness of information booklet on Complications of Diabetes mellitus among patients with Diabetes mellitus. The obtained “t” value 12.18. with df=29 is greater than the critical ratio 0.05 level of significance= 2.04. Here null hypothesis is rejected and alternative hypothesis is accepted. The information booklet is found to be effective. These back ground factors were compared with the pre test knowledge score and association was tested among them by using Chi-square test. The study concludes that information booklet can improve knowledge level among patients with Diabetes mellitus. The study ends with a list of recommendations for further study, references and appendices.
