Abstract
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of gums that causes the supporting structure of teeth to be disrupted due to periodontal ligament degeneration, formation of periodontal pockets, and resorption of alveolar bone. The adjunctive use of local drug delivery along with mechanical cleansing is therapeutically beneficial in treating periodontal pockets in chronic periodontitis. The technique of administering drugs locally is a simple and minimally invasive process. This treatment offers a significant advantage as it ensures that the drug concentration after application exceeds the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and remains effective for several weeks. Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a highly effective local antimicrobial agent that is extensively used for treating periodontitis. This article aimed to provide a narrative review of the currently available local administration of chlorhexidine in the treatment of periodontitis.
