Abstract

Introduction: Neonatal sepsis is a worldwide problem and early diagnosis and management can considerably decrease the morbidity associated with sepsis and improve the outcome. Aims and objective: To study the clinical profile of neonatal sepsis and determine the associated risk factors and to evaluate the clinic-pathological correlation of neonatal sepsis. Materials and methods: Prospective cohort study of 62 neonates admitted over 1 month in Neonatal intensive care unit in a tertiary care centre hospital. Results: Study showed that incidence of Early onset sepsis (EOS) was higher than Late onset sepsis (LOS). Spontaneous preterm labour was found to be the most common risk factor for EOS. Major risk factors for LOS were Prematurity, Low birth weight and need for mechanical ventilation. The 3 most predominant clinical manifestation of neonatal sepsis were Hypoglycaemia, Feed intolerance and Mottling. Study showed that there was paucity of laboratory parameters for clinical correlation of sepsis. Conclusion: In study it was found that majority neonates showed non specific and subtle signs of sepsis with laboratory parameters showing less clinical correlation. This necessitates the need for high index of suspicion for early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis and to improve their outcome.
