Abstract

A study on Avifaunal diversity of the Little Rann of Katchchh (LRK), Gujarat, India was conducted from October 2020 to December 2021. LRK represents a unique ecosystem with combination of saline desert and a vast seasonal wetland. Gulf of Katchchh occupying an area of 7300 Km2 is biologically one of the most productive and diversified habitats along the west coast of India. The northern shore with numerous shoals and creeks also sustains large stretches of mangroves. The area under mangrove cover along the Gujarat coast is the second largest in India, next only to the Sundarbans area.. Due to high salinity, grazing and cutting pressure the Kachchh mangroves have stunted growth and are only 1-2 m tall and at untouched patches gain a height upto 5m. A large portion of the LRK is under legal protection as the Wild Ass Sanctuary (WAS). Islands (locally called bet) are the unique sub ecosystems in the ecosystem of Little Rann of Kachchh Comprising of about 74 'bets' or islands on an ancient seabed. These 'bets' are covered with grass and scrub, and support a variety of wildlife. There are around 74 bets and ‘dhasi’ in the LRK. Owing to their relatively better vegetation status, bet’s also support relatively rich fauna. Many saltpans, Islands and intertidal coastal system with mangroves, offer favourable conditions for feeding, breeding and shelter to a variety of birds. All along the creek and in and around several Islands tall mangrove trees are seen crowded with waterbirds. The avifauna includes both resident birds & migratory birds. Salt mining by traditional salt workers (Agariyas)
