Abstract

Spinal anesthesia is a common technique for orthopedic surgeries, with patient positioning playing a significant role in anesthesia delivery and perioperative outcomes. The choice between sitting and lateral positions remains debated, necessitating a comparative analysis to elucidate the optimal positioning technique. This study aimed to compare the effects of sitting and lateral positions in spinal anesthesia for orthopedic surgeries, focusing on patient demographics, hemodynamic changes, onset of sensory block, drug dosage requirements, and patient comfortEthical approval was obtained, and 200 patients undergoing elective orthopedic surgeries at Srinivas Hospital, Mukka, Mangalore, were included. Patients were divided into sitting and lateral groups, and data were collected using an observational method. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 23.0. Significant age, gender, weight, and height differences were noted between sitting and lateral positions. Hemodynamically, SBP notably increased in sitting at 15- and 30-minutes post-anesthesia. Additionally, sensory block onset was faster, and drug requirements were higher in the lateral position. Lumbar puncture values were also significantly elevated in the sitting position. These findings emphasize the importance of patient positioning in orthopedic surgeries under spinal anesthesiaInformed decision-making in selecting optimal positioning techniques for spinal anesthesia is crucial to enhance perioperative outcomes and patient safety. By considering patient demographics, hemodynamic responses, onset of sensory block, and drug dosage requirements, clinicians can tailor anesthesia protocols to individual patient needs, ultimately improving patient comfort and surgical outcomes.
