Arthur Miller: A Reflection of American Society

Arthur Miller’s plays have always been enriched with moral and socio-political themes and ideas. He has been an avid critic of the contemporary American Society and its beliefs, making him successful in reflecting the true nature of the human psyche during the period when capitalism was gaining prominence and humans were basically indulged in a sort of a rat-race to reach new heights which turned them into selfish beings bereft of morality or social consciousness. His materials have been derived from his personal experiences as he himself did not come from a rich background but had humble beginnings. His characters too are never aristocratic but are always underprivileged. Almost all of Miller’s plays portray the rawness of the American dream and the struggles which come with it. The American dream in all its glory seems great but was never a cake walk, never easy to achieve as it may seem. Miller portrays the problems in both social and psychological contexts which he had to face in his life in the real world and is not as free flowing and simple as they thought it would be. Miller is using the collapse of the false values of the American society where the audience could make out that it is the human dilemma that has come to a certain end. The dilemma which his characters have to face eventually leads to their deaths by suicide. Suicide in Miller’s plays hold a significant place as it is his way to bring the flawed character’s to justice by their own hands. It is the ultimate punishment of their wrong doings which the characters themselves have to bare; in Death of a Salesman Willy Lowman kills himself by self inflicted car accident and in All My Sons, Joe Keller shoots himself to death.
