Abstract

Abstract There are indications that some vegetable farmers in Edo State may not be using fertilizers (organic or inorganic) due to issues bordering on cost and availability. It therefore becomes necessary look into the usage and non-usage of fertilizers and identify gaps that may exist. This study was thus designed to analyze the effect of fertilizer usage on fluted pumpkin production in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State. Data for the study were obtained from 180 fluted pumpkin farmers in the area using a two–stage sampling procedure, involving snowballing technique (to obtain a samplings frame of fluted pumpkin farmers in Ovia North East LGA) and a simple random sampling of 10 fluted pumpkin farmers from each of the farming communities from the sampling frame. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, multiple regression, budgeting techniques and a t-test. The production of fluted pumpkin was found to be profitable with an estimated annual net profit of ₦126,377.85/ha (for farmers fertilizers). Farmers not using fertilizer had an estimated annual net profit of ₦68,734.80/ha. A t-test showed a significant difference between mean net profit of farmers using fertilizers and those not using fertilizer. The regression analysis showed that cost of seed was significant (p ≤ 0.1) but negatively related to profit. Sex, education and farming experience were significant (p ≤ 0.05) and positively related to profit. It was concluded that fluted pumpkin farmers in the study area should be sensitized on the benefits of using organic or inorganic fertilizers in crop cultivation.
