Abstract
In many parts of the world, the tradition of using herbal drugs to combat various diseases and infections persists. Kundush, a key component of the Unani system of medicine, has been utilized by Unani physicians for its numerous medicinal properties since ancient times. Globally, intensive research is being conducted on medicinal plants as potential sources of novel drugs and treatments for many ailments in traditional and folklore medicine, which can lead to new drug discoveries. Kundush (Centipeda minima) is effectively used to relieve Musakkin-i-Ṣudā (headache) act as a Muhallil (resolvent), Munaqqī-i-Dimāgh (brain purifier), Mudirr-i-Bawl diuretic, Mushtahī (appetite stimulant), Dafi‘-i-Tashannuj (antispasmodic), Mu‘aṭṭish (thirst quencher) and Qātil-i-Dīdān (anthelmintic). This study aims to review the plant, gather data from Unani and conventional literature regarding its description, ethno-medicinal uses and various pharmacological studies, and to scientifically evaluate Centepeda minima. Scientific research demonstrates that Centepeda minima has anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, antiproliferative, anticancer, antiviral, antibacterial, hepatoprotective properties and more. The study primarily covers the plant's macroscopic and microscopic features and its medicinal properties, which are attributed to its rich Phyto constituents in ethanolic extracts, including glycosides, phenolic and polyphenolic acids, and sesquiterpene lactone.
