This qualitative study investigates the impact of literature circles on the development of critical thinking skills among students, with a specific focus on long-term effects, their implementation in non-Western educational contexts, and the influence of role differentiation. Conducted within the Vietnamese educational system, the study employed semi-structured interviews with students and teachers who have engaged in literature circles. The findings reveal that literature circles significantly enhance students' critical thinking skills over time, fostering improved analytical abilities, argument formulation, and perspective-taking. In the Vietnamese context, literature circles were particularly effective due to their collaborative and student-centered nature, contrasting with traditional lecture-based methods. Role differentiation within literature circles further contributed to the development of critical thinking by requiring students to engage with texts in various ways, depending on their assigned roles. These results suggest that literature circles offer a valuable pedagogical approach for enhancing critical thinking skills in diverse educational settings. The study underscores the importance of incorporating student-centered and interactive learning methods to cultivate critical thinking, especially in non-Western contexts.
