Abstract

This study explores Dai Nam University students' perspectives on utilizing ChatGPT as an assistant in enhancing their writing skills. Through qualitative analysis of interview transcripts, five primary themes emerged. First, ChatGPT significantly aids students in generating and organizing ideas for their writing tasks, with many participants highlighting its role in elaborating and refining their thoughts. Second, it improves grammatical accuracy, providing instant feedback on errors, which students found particularly useful given their varying levels of English proficiency. Third, the tool enhances vocabulary range, exposing students to new words and phrases, thereby enriching their language use. Fourth, ChatGPT facilitates a more efficient learning process by offering immediate responses and clarifications, saving time otherwise spent on traditional resources. Despite these benefits, the fifth theme addresses challenges such as the complexity of generated content, the need for multiple prompts to achieve desired outputs, and potential over-reliance on the tool, which may hinder independent learning and creativity. These findings suggest that while ChatGPT is a valuable educational aid, mindful integration and supplementary guidance are essential to maximize its effectiveness in writing instruction.
