Abstract
Nurse leaders take a broad view of how daily tasks impact the overall goals of the health care organization. The author’s purpose was to explore and describe the experiences of nurses in accepting leadership roles. A purposive sample of 10 nurse managers was interviewed. Using Collaizi’s (1978) phenomenology method, rigor was established through the application of verification, validation, and validity. From 184 significant statements, 20 themes emerged. The experiences of nurses in accepting leadership roles included strong commitment and dedication, carrying out leadership tasks, handling the work force, making a bigger impact, taking on the challenge, dealing with different personalities, and sacrificing personal time. Their means of coping were focused on enhancing leadership and management skills, evolving oneself for the better, learning through the process, applying leadership techniques, using teamwork, having support from management, maximizing support from colleagues, drawing strength from family and friends, and balancing work-life. The insights that nurse managers wanted to share with fellow nurses and the nursing administration in general involved developing work ethics, truthfulness in the job description, appreciation of effective communication in the workplace, and lifelong learning and professional development. Nurse leaders make a difference in workplace culture and drive positive changes in health care legislation. But a title and education aren’t enough to create an effective leader. Nurses need to believe their contributions make a difference in the organization.
