Abstract

In environmental assessment of water bodies, the morphological deformities of chironomid larvae offer a useful way of evaluating sediment toxicity. Laboratory and field studies have indicated a link between morphological deformities of chironomids and the concentrations of chemicals used that eventually enter the aquatic ecosystem. Midge larvae can metabolize organic contaminants but the breakdown products may also be responsible for morphological abnormalities. The frequency and severity of mouth, body and tail deformities of Chironomous and the relationship of deformities have been investigated.
