Abstract
Benzofuran serves as the foundation for numerous structurally diverse compounds, many of which exhibit significant pharmacological activities. These heterocyclic compounds are valuable in drug discovery due to their structural versatility, leading to potential new therapeutic agents. Benzofuran derivatives possess a wide array of biological properties, including antihyperglycemic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor, antiviral, antiarrhythmic, and antipyretic effects, as well as functioning as enzyme inhibitors. Numerous naturally occurring substances feature benzofuran ring systems with various substituents, particularly at the C-2 position. Some of the most well-known benzofuran compounds with significant pharmaceutical applications include Amiodarone, Angelicin, Bergapten, Nodakenetin, Xanthotoxin, and Usnic acid.
