Abstract
This paper analyses the importance of athlete branding and marketing and examines whether the popularity of a sport determines the success of an athlete's brand. In line with the aforementioned, the first half of the paper provides a general discussion and analysis of branding and marketing and its extension into the sports industry as part of which, the importance of effective sports branding and marketing and the drawbacks of poor strategies are pointed out. The latter half of this paper takes up the example of two types of sports; basketball and football. Using the case study of two athletes from each sport, this paper points out that the sport's popularity does not solely impact the success of athlete branding. The success of an athlete's brand can be determined and modified by many other factors like the athlete's performance, personality, unique stories etc.
