Abstract
The term "cosmetic" originates from the Greek word "kosmetikos," which means having the ability to organize or being skilled in decoration. "Kosmein" refers to decorating, while "kosmos" signifies harmony. Cosmetics encompass various preparations applied to the human body to beautify, preserve, or alter appearance, as well as cleanse, color, condition, or protect the skin, hair, nails, lips, eyes, or teeth. Despite being attracted to beauty and personal care products as consumers, the excessive use of toxic ingredients and hazardous chemicals in cosmetics poses serious health risks. These substances can cause adverse effects on the skin and potentially penetrate other organs, leading to carcinogenicity. This review paper delves into different cosmetic products, their roles, and suggests replacements for harmful ingredients based on scientific literature reviews. Cosmetics play a pivotal role in daily routines, offering a range of products aimed at cleansing, beautifying, and enhancing appearance. However, the potential toxicity of chemicals utilized in these products presents a significant health hazard. Heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, and nickel, commonly found in cosmetics, can induce various health issues even at low concentrations. Furthermore, certain chemicals have the potential to disrupt the hormone system, raising further health concerns. This paper explores the adverse effects of commonly employed cosmetic ingredients, such as sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens, oxybenzone, and formaldehyde. It also underscores the importance of method validation in ensuring the safety of cosmetic products. Analytical procedures, including linearity, and the determination of limits of detection and quantification, are indispensable for assessing the safety and efficacy of cosmetic formulations. The paper concludes by emphasizing the necessity of striking a balance between beauty and safety in the cosmetic industry.
