Abstract
In the vast field of dentistry, numerous opportunities exist for potential trigeminal nerve damage, leading to the development of painful post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathy (PTTN). Fortunately, though, PTTN is less common in dental practice than other common general surgical operations, where 20–45% of patients experience persistent pain following procedures like breast surgery, thoracotomy, and limb amputation. There is a lot of diversity in the clinical features of PTTN, which is partly explained by the kind and severity of the injury. PTTN's clinical presentation varies greatly depending on the nature and severity of the injury, encompassing spontaneous and evoked pain, as well as positive and negative somatosensory signs. Patients who have PTTN may be at risk of having needless dental or surgical treatments performed in an effort to relieve their pain because the condition is relatively uncommon in dental practices. Moreover, PTTN and other orofacial pain disorders can occasionally be confused for regional neuralgias. In the intraoral setting in particular, PTTN in its early phases is frequently misinterpreted as odontogenic pain. PTTN is usually managed according to guidelines for peripheral neuropathic pain. To shed light on the likelihood of developing painful PTTN following surgical treatment, endodontic treatment, dental implants, or local anaesthesia, this study conducts a review. The review includes comprehensive searches using key terms in PubMed and Web of Science, with English being the only permitted language.
