Abstract
Abstract This study explores the complex personality of Gollum, a significant character. crafted by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. He is known by the name of Sméagol among his family and friends. He is a tragic character, and his tragedy is caused by the obsessive possession of the One Ring, forged by Dark Lord Sauron. His character shows a dual personality, torn between his remaining original self, Sméagol, and the dark influences of the Corrupting Power of the Ring. This essay explores Gollum’s complex persona, analyses his internal conflict, contradictory traits, evolution, and transformation, and argues if he is really a hero or a typical villain in the narrative. Gollum's transformation from a normal to an abnormal, malevolent, isolated being shows the powerful impact of greed and lust for power. Despite his treacherous actions, the moments of loyalty and care for Frodo, show the remaining virtues of human nature that seek redemption. However, his tragic internal conflict between good and evil, resulted in his ultimate demise. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of Gollum's character. as he is neither wholly villainous nor heroic but deeply defined by his own experience and the internal conflict.
