Abstract

This study delves into the psychological portrayal of disability and consciousness in two contemporary novels: Malini Chib's "One Little Finger" (2011) and Zai Whitaker's "Kannan Panna" (2015). Through a critical lens informed by psychology, the analysis explores how these narratives depict the lived experiences of characters navigating disability. The concept of embodied consciousness, where physical and mental states are intricately linked, serves as a framework for examining how the characters grapple with trauma, identity formation, and the perception of their own bodies. The analysis investigates how Chib and Whitaker portray the psychological impact of disability, including potential feelings of isolation, societal marginalization, and the search for self-acceptance. The study employs close readings of key scenes and dialogues to illustrate how the protagonists in each novel experience and understand the world through their unique embodiment. It explores how they develop coping mechanisms, forge meaningful connections, and potentially even find empowerment within the context of their disabilities. By drawing connections between these literary works, the study aims to contribute to a broader understanding of disability narratives in literature. It emphasizes the psychological complexities inherent in the disabled experience and the resilience individuals can demonstrate in the face of adversity. The analysis highlights the significance of literature in fostering empathy and challenging societal perceptions of disability.
