Multimodal speech emotion recognition (SER) is an emerging field at the intersection of signal processing, machine learning, and affective computing. Emotions conveyed through speech are multifaceted and complex, influenced by various factors including tone, pitch, tempo, and linguistic content. In recent years, researchers have increasingly recognized the importance of integrating multiple modalities such as audio, visual, and textual information to enhance the accuracy and robustness of SER systems. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of multimodal SER, discussing techniques, challenges, and future directions in the field. We survey state-of-the-art methods for feature extraction, fusion, and classification, highlighting the strengths and limitations of different approaches. Furthermore, we identify key challenges such as data scarcity, cross-lingual and cross-cultural variability, and ethical considerations, and propose potential solutions. Finally, we outline future research directions aimed at advancing the performance and applicability of multimodal SER systems in real-world scenarios.
