Abstract
In today's ever-evolving world, the intersection of emotional intelligence and environmental awareness emerges as a critical area of focus, particularly in the formative years of young adults. Emotional intelligence, characterized by the adept management of emotions and interactions, is essential for navigating the complexities of environmental challenges. This paper underscores the interplay between emotional competence and environmental consciousness, emphasizing their profound impact on personal development and societal well-being. The capacity to recognize, understand, express, and regulate emotions, termed emotional competence, plays a pivotal role in adolescents' ability to cope with stress, foster positive relationships, and make informed decisions. Conversely, deficits in emotional competence may lead to impulsivity, interpersonal difficulties, and mental health disorders, hindering both personal growth and environmental stewardship. Moreover, environmental awareness is crucial for fostering a sense of global citizenship and instilling critical thinking skills necessary for addressing pressing ecological issues such as pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Research indicates a symbiotic relationship between environmental consciousness and emotional competence, wherein heightened emotional intelligence correlates with a greater propensity for environmentally responsible behavior. However, the relationship between emotional competence and environmental awareness is multifaceted. Environmental challenges can evoke strong emotional responses, ranging from concern to apathy, particularly among adolescents. Insufficient emotional competence may exacerbate feelings of guilt or overwhelm, impeding proactive engagement with environmental issues. To empower young adults to effect meaningful change in their communities and beyond, interventions must nurture both emotional intelligence and environmental awareness. Evidence-based strategies can equip individuals with the psychological resilience and cognitive tools needed to navigate environmental complexities while safeguarding mental well-being. This paper presents a comprehensive review of literature and observational research, elucidating the intricate dynamics underlying emotional intelligence and environmental consciousness in young adults. By shedding light on these intertwined concepts, we aim to inform mental health professionals, educators, and policymakers, facilitating the development of targeted interventions that promote holistic growth and environmental stewardship among young adults.
