This study investigates the alarming rise of cybercrime facilitated by social media platforms in India. With the country boasting one of the world's largest internet user bases, social media has become a breeding ground for criminal activity. The paper explores how these platforms' inherent features, coupled with a lack of digital literacy and robust legal frameworks, contribute to the proliferation of cybercrime. Particular emphasis is placed on the vulnerability of two key demographics: youth and women. The paper examines how young people's inherent trust and openness online make them prime targets for cyberbullying, sextortion and online predation. Furthermore, the research explores the unique challenges faced by women on social media, including harassment stalking and the misuse of personal information. The paper adopts a multi-pronged approach, analysing data on reported cybercrimes in India and examines the limitations of existing legislation and explores potential solutions. These solutions may include promoting digital literacy campaigns, strengthening legal frameworks and fostering greater collaboration between law enforcement agencies and social media platforms. By delving into the specific risks posed to young people and women, this paper aims to provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators and social media companies. Ultimately, it seeks to contribute to a safer online environment for all Indian citizens.
