Abstract
The registration where as political candidates give their potential votes while the others elections where offenders of democracy. This descriptive research analyzes the causes and characteristics of political violence arising from two major election periods from 2013 and 2016 in two cities of Basilan Province. It specifically identifies violent conflicts arising from political scenarios in the 2013 and 2016 national and local elections in Lamitan and Isabela City, determines the nature of violent conflict or feud related to political issues, and analyzes causal or root causes of political violence escalating to RIDO. Employing mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, the study utilized quantitative data from the Alert Conflict Monitoring System and gathered local responses from interviews through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) among key informants of Lamitan and Isabela City. Results from the documentary analysis and interviews showed that cases of violent conflicts from political issues consisted of conflicts on elective positions, exercise of democratic freedom, political repression, rebellion, other political issues, and extremist violence. Political violence also contributes to simultaneous identity-based conflicts on gender issues and shadow crimes of kidnapping. Respondents perceive that political violence is embedded in the culture and the clan system intensifies political conflicts due to the private armed groups of politicians. Rampant firearms possession and affiliation of private armed groups to terrorists cause the increase of violent conflicts in the area. To control the growing violence of political conflicts supporting or arising clan feuds, the hierarchical relationship between clan leaders and the member must be studied thoroughly to understand the relationship between the ruling clans and the governed local residents. It is also recommended that further studies must be done to provide retrospective or prospective investigation of violent conflicts of political causes in longer duration of research work
