Indian Coal Industry, UN Sustainable Development Goals

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were incorporated by the UN member states in 2015 to represent the global agenda for equitable, socially inclusive, and environmentally sustainable economic development until 2030. It is seen as a vision statement towards a better world. On the other hand, coal industry has been seen as a major contributor towards environmental degradation and hence has been expected to have higher sensitivity towards the SDGs. In the context of India where coal continues to be the main source of electricity generation for propelling the growth of the nation and it is expected to retain the majority share in the energy portfolio in foreseeable future, it becomes interesting to assess how the Indian Coal Mining Industry remains committed to the global sustainability expectations. This paper attempts to examine the aspects of SDGs connected with the coal mining industry and goes ahead to assess the performance of the coal industry in India in meeting the expectations of SDGs.
