Abstract
Background: Cutaneous Dermatophytosis is a common infection seen all over the country and the world amongst all ages and sex, caused by various dermatophytes. The diagnosis is clinical but definitive diagnosis is obtained by taking a skin scraping from the affected site and conducting a 1. KOH examination 2. Fungal culture of the skin scrapings. Although several studies have been conducted in various parts of India, there is little evidence from the northeastern region of India. To address the paucity of data from the northeastern state of Nagaland, a study was conducted at a tertiary healthcare centre to determine the trend of dermatophytosis in Nagaland. Methods: 641 clinically diagnosed superficial dermatophytosis patients, who visited the Department of Dermatology, between January 2018 and December 2021 were included in this study. Skin scrapping and nail clips were collected and subjected to 10% KOH and fungal culture on Dermatophyte Test Medium (DTM). Positive cultures were then inoculated to slide culture for speciation using Lactophenol Cotton Blue (LPCB). Results: Out of 641 participants, the Male to Female ratio was 1.28. Most common age group affected was 21-30 years, comprising 31.20% (200) of the study participants, followed by 31-40 years with 25.18%. KOH positivity rate was 80.34% (515/641) while culture positivity rate was 46.49% (298/641). Of the culture positive cases, Trichophyton mentagrophytes was the most common species isolated 61.07% (182/298), followed by Trichophyton spp. 30.20% (90/298) and Trichophyton rubrum 7.05% (21/298).
