Abstract: Abstract Democracy is defined as a form of government in which the citizens of that country have direct power to participate in the election and elect the representatives for forming a government body called a parliament. The democratic government in India is the largest one. The beginning of democratic system in India was when the constitution of India came into effect on 26 th January 1950. Democratic India reveals that for choosing representatives through the election, every citizen of India has the night to vote without any discrimination irrespective of any creed, caste, religion, region and sex. The principles on which the democratic government of India is based are liberty, equality, fraternity and justice. Though the Indian constitution of 1950 made India a democratic republic with universal adult franchise, the country’s deeply unequal society based on caste hierarchy. Low levels of economic development and a large rural population mired in poverty and illiteracy suggested that this was inhospitable soil for democracy to take root. It has witnessed the holding of regular, free and fair elections in which the rural and unlettered poor actively participate, as also social movements and a vibrant civil society that make demands on the political system that political parties may not. Above all, the idea of democracy has strikingly captured the popular imagination.
