Abstract
This paper attempts to examine the interconnections between decent work, stagnation of the manufacturing sector, and failure of inclusive growth in India’s context. Based on the ASI data for 2-digit industry classification, the manufacturing industry shows signs of pre-matured de-industrialisation in India since the mid-1980s onwards. This does not augur well for generating decent work and inclusive growth.There must be some inappropriate elements in the policy interventions for industrial development over the past many decades that the desired progress in the growth of decent work couldn’t be materialised. In the light of Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), we argue that the industrial policy framework must promote labour absorbing manufacturing growth for achieving greater economic inclusion.
