Abstract

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Self management involves taking responsipilities for your own health and taking the intiative to do so. This can be accomplished by learning information and skills that will help you deal with the difficulties you may encounter during and after your cancer treatement. The aim of the study was to develop a self care and coping strategies, women with breast cancer. OBJECTIVES; To evaluate the effectiveness of prechemotherapy education on self care and coping strategies, of women with breast cancer DESIGN; Preexprimental one group pretest and post test design is used to assess the effectiveness of pre chemotheraphy education on self care and coping strategies, of women with breast cancer. SETTINGS; Oncology Unit of Erode Cancer Center , Thindal, Erode. SAMPLE SIZE; Total sample size was 30 Women with Breast Cancer who were residing at Erode Cancer Center, Erode. Who were fulfilling inclusion criteria. SAMPLING TECHNIQUE; Purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample. METHODSl A preexperimental study was conducted with one group pretest- post test, to find out the effectiveness of pre chemotheraphy education on self care and coping strategies, of women with breast cancer at Oncology unit cancer center, Erode. Pretest was done by using interview schedule self administered questionaire was prepared with extensing review of literature. The content validity of questionaire and education was established with valuable inputs from the experts in the field of nursing, medical oncologist. RESULT; The finding of the study revealed that the overall performance of pretest self care mean 36, and overall performance of pretest coping scale mean 11, and overall performance of post test self care mean 73.4 and overall performance of posttest coping scale mean 22, mean difference standard deviation of self care 8.31 and standard deviation of coping scale 4.68, table value 2 and the calculated “t” value 19.82, df was , p<0.05 level which shows highly significant. The findings reveal that there was significant difference in pretest and posttest scores. The obtained ”t” test value for self care and coping strategies scores overall and demographic wise are significant. The obtained “t” value was greater than the table “t” value . there was significant difference in the pretest and posttest self care and coping strategies scores. Its shows the effectiveness of teaching program. CONCLUSION; The prechemotherapy education was most effective for Women with Breast Cancer to improve their self care and coping strategies. This result indicates that prechemotherapy education self care and coping strategies was significantly effective in improving self care and coping abilities, Women with Breast Cancer.
