Abstract

Abstract: The apparel industry heavily relies on fabric, a significant contributor to production costs. This study explores better Fabric Utilization, waste reduction, and the industry's economic, technological, and sustainability challenges. Material waste poses financial burdens, while outdated equipment, software, and validation processes hinder progress. Manufacturers are investing in technology to optimize material usage due to the sector's annual production of 92 million tons of textile waste. Stakeholders are introducing initiatives, highlighting the need for careful assessment. The study focuses on ABC Company, a prominent player in Sri Lanka's Apparel Sector, examining the critical issue of efficient Fabric Utilization. Key elements explored include Marker Efficiency Enhancement (MEE), Automated Cutter Machinery (ACM), and Wastage Factor Revalidation (WFR). Following a pilot test confirming the reliability and validity of measured variables with Cronbach's Alpha. The research instrument of self-administered questionnaire was distributed among 110 respondents out of 154 population comprises at ABC Company. Data were analysed using SPSS software, revealing a significant, robust positive correlation among all variables (MEE = 0.771, ACM = 0.799, WFR = 0.776) at a significance level of 0.000, indicating a strong positive relationship. All the variables were significant under the Regression results 0.153, 0.437, and 0.447. ACM emerged as the most influential variable, with a beta factor of 0.418, and the developed model explained 72.5% of the dependent variable's variance (R2 = 0.725). Future research endeavours could further explore the remaining 27.5% of factors affecting the dependent variable. This study's significance extends beyond ABC Company, benefiting the broader apparel industry, fostering sustainability, operational excellence, and enhanced learning, thus bridging industry demands with consumer preferences and contributing to academic progress. For future research, consider exploring diverse organizations, conducting long-term studies, incorporating qualitative methods, and investigating external factors to enhance understanding of Fabric Utilization in the apparel industry.
