Abstract

Most of the road network of about seventy five percent (75%) serviced by TANROADS Shinyanga are unpaved trunk and regional roads which deteriorate more rapidly than paved roads. This study focused on developing a model and the maintenance system capable of predicting service life of unpaved roads maintained by TANROADS Shinyanga that enables proactive maintenance. Random sampling techniques involving 67 respondents from the population of road maintenance participants in Shinyanga region were used. Expert interviews, literature reviews, observations and questionnaires were employed as the data collection methods. The analysis was performed with Microsoft Excel and Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS version22). Study findings shows that the developed maintenance system has the capacity of predicting service life of unpaved roads. Considering the eleven (11) sampled roads, the highest predicted duration was 204.4 days for Kahama – Tulole road and the lowest duration found to be 127.5 days for Kahama - Bulige - Mwakitolyo – Solwa road meaning that the one can provide reliable service for more duration than the other. The study concludes that that the developed maintenance system for predicting service life of unpaved roads significantly enhances maintenance management of Trunk and Regional roads maintained by TANROADS. By providing accurate information about climate condition of the area, traffic loading, road conditions, material quality and gravel loss, the system enables the maintenance team to perform proactive maintenance so as to boost the overall performance and longevity of roads, enhance transportation and community accessibility to social services.
