Due to steep terrain and fast flowing rivers in the Himalayan region, medium to mega size of Hydropower Projects are constructing day by day. Tunnel is one of the best and short routes of water conveyance system for power production. Several kilometres of tunnels have been constructed and new tunnels are planned in this region. This paper focus on the design and construction practices of hydropower tunnel passes through weak rock mass with high rock cover of the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. Most of the hydropower tunnels undergo excessive deformation and support failure during the tunnel construction, which delayed the project as well as increases the cost of project. Tehri pumped storage plant is implemented by two TRT’s aligned parallel to each other known as TRT-3 and 4 having the length of 1078.00 m and 1187.00 m respectively with 9.10 m excavated diameter and modified horseshoe shape. In order to facilitate the excavation of TRT’s one single adit (EA-7) was provided at Rd: -148.50 and 214.00m. Tunnelling excavation was completed by conventional drill and blast method with heading and benching sequence and simultaneously reinforced concrete lining is in progress to achieve the assigned targets. Tunnelling during excavation possess through varying geological features and had seepage at various locations which has also been discussed to tackle these conditions with suitable methodology as well as the major innovation.
