Abstract: Abstract: The present research paper is an attempt to reveal existential crisis and quest for identity of female characters in Ralph Ellison’s two novels; The Invisible Man and Three Days Before the Shooting. Existentialism is as much a literary phenomenon as a philosophical one. It can be defined as the philosophical theory. With its themes such as dread, boredom, alienation, the absurd, freedom, nothingness, and so on, the philosophy highlights the concept of existence in general and human existence in particular. The existentialist philosophers have also concentrated on human existence and focused on the condition of women. Patriarchy is a male centered social system. It marginalizes women in every sphere of life. Ellison throughout his novels, attempts to present women of 1950s who played supportive roles. They were not allowed to lead any action individually. Their freedom was already in the hands of patriarchy. It became more difficult for them to define their identity and status to bring themselves out from two boundaries; the first boundary where they are women and the second boundary where they are African-American blacks. Thus, the present research work will explore and investigate identity and status of female characters throughout Ellison’s fiction.
