Betting is the usage of unfair means by either an individual or a group. In this, those who organize the betting procedures are known as bookies. Many players, celebrities and even team owners have been found to be indulging in match fixings. Over the years we have come across many instances of betting practices. At present, when everything has gone digital, betting has also made a remarkable presence on the digital platform. Traditional betting has shifted to online betting and its impact is widespread. Nowadays, betting is carried out more in the online mode using various apps that are being openly promoted by the players and the celebrities themselves. The in-game environment has witnessed a gradual change from using unfair means privately to now practicing them freely. Various legal apps that promote online betting are majorly free applications such as Dream 11, Winzo, 20 Bet, Pure win, Fun 88, etc. These apps are developed by sportsbooks and gambling brands that also design casino games. They allow betting on sports events (Cricket, football, etc.) from wherever, all we need is a smartphone and a stable internet connection. Thousands of people risk their money to get a chance to win and earn more money similar to traditional gambling like gaming machines and lottery. Sports betting is profitable but majority of the bettors lose their money. Many people aren’t aware of how betting is still practiced and about online betting. This topic is not a widely known, discussed or researched upon, the reason why we don’t find significant content on the topic. People are also unaware that how harmful and addictive these apps can grow up to be. Betting carries various disadvantages with itself. We have several unpopular cases of debt, suicides, stealing, harassment and murders as a result of betting. These cases are not limited to any single area or country, but has been a serious topic at large. We have very few movies made on betting, but with the advent of the OTT platforms a single web series has been dedicated to betting in cricket. Inside Edge is a highly controversial web series that revolves around the cricket team Mumbai Mavericks and the team owner Zarina Malik. The series cover betting, spot-fixing, doping and more. It also gives a check on the legalizing of betting in cricket and the black money surrounding it. Along with praises, the web series having 3 seasons has and is still facing a lot of criticism for its performance and story line. The cast includes vivek Oberoi, richa chadda, tanuj Virwani , Siddhant Chaturvedi, angad bedi, aamir bashir and sapna pabbi. This series has made a remarkable significance about the majorly uncovered betting industry on cricket. While betting on a cricket match, players and celebrities can also bet on the scores of the teams. When the match begins bets are made on the possibilities whether the team’s score will be over or under that predicted score. In this manner, every run, every catch, and boundary can be betted on. The process is much similar to share markets where we analyze the situation, make a guess about the result and earn money from it. In cricket, a lot of factors have to be considered such as the weather, pitch, team, strength and weakness of the players etc. Online betting has now become an increasingly popular trend in sports, especially in cricket. I will be highlighting these key areas surrounding online betting and attempting a detailed comparative study on the shift from traditional to online betting along with statistic and data. As this area is not a widely researched one, my dissertation will have Inside Edge as its background that will be supporting the information, facts, data, analytics and statistics that I shall provide in my research work.
