मोहन राकेश ने आधुनिक मनुष्य को अपने जीवन में एक-दूसरे के महत्व को खोजते हुए प्रस्तुत किया है। मनुष्य के जीवन की परिस्थितियों को संबंधों के माध्यम से चित्रित किया है। आधे-अधूरे आज के सामाजिक परिवेश में अपने अस्तित्व के लिए संघर्षरत आधुनिक मानव के जीवन-अनुभवों की विडंबनाओं और उसकी यातनापूर्ण नियति को उजागर करने वाली परिस्थितियों से साक्षात्कार कराता है। यह नाटक समकालीन जीवन की स्थितियों पर आधारित है, जिसमें परिवारों के टूटने की विडंबना को दिखाया गया है। नाटक में मध्यवर्गीय जीवन के संदर्भ में व्यक्ति के परिवेश के साथ होने वाली तकरार, संबंधों की ऊब, एकरसता, तनाव तथा अकेलेपन को प्रस्तुत किया गया है। आधे-अधूरे नाटक में चित्रित परिवार में अजीब सी घुटन, मायूसी, अजनबीयत छाई हुई है। पुरुष की आर्थिक कमाई नहीं के बराबर है। उसके सारे आर्थिक प्रयास असफल हो चुके हैं। पत्नी की दृष्टि में वह फालतू और निकम्मा हो गया है। उसका अपने घर में ही कोई स्थान नहीं है। पुरुष और स्त्री के बीच बराबर किसी-न-किसी बाहरी आदमी का बना रहना भी इसके लिए उत्तरदायी है।
