Construction of highways is important for building the nation and reflects the development of the nation. However, most of these highway construction projects may impact surrounding environment and also the resident community due to their location, route of alignment and other associated activities that impact either positively or negatively (Sharma, Dev, Dhyani & Gnagopadhyaya, 2009). Environmental pollution is currently the biggest challenge facing the world today. Environmental pollution can have adverse effects on the public living in the society. So it is important to identify and prevent these impacts, particularly the impact of air pollution with reference to construction of highways. The transport sector is a major contributor of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for approximately 20 percent of all CO2 emissions globally. In India, transportation sector contributes to about 10 percent of the total national greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 emissions from the transport sector will continue to grow by 4.1 to 6.1 percent every year and could lead to increase by seven times in year 2050 as compared to that present in the year 2010. Under Paris agreement-aligned scenario, passenger transport demand is 22 percent lower in year 2050 than under current scenario. In terms of emission, a contribution of about 17.5 per cent (205 Mt CO2 e/year) reduction in year 2050 compared to current scenario is required. Therefore it is important to measure the Air Quality Index (AQI) or Air Pollution Index (API) along and around highway construction. Assessing AQI values help understanding the status of air pollution and can better for its mitigation measures. Few recommendations are suggested in the conclusion section
