Abstract

This paper presents experimental investigation of increase in efficiency and reduction in power consumption of a conventional air conditioning by implementing sub-cooling techniques. To achieve this, a tubing system is employed between the condenser and the fan, and the heat is extracted from the condenser through this tubing. The tubing contains partial refrigerant bypassed just after the evaporator and circulated in the condenser, and then passed through the coolant sump. The coolant is also circulated to cool the condenser using a pump. This results in the removal of additional heat from the refrigerant flowing through the condenser, resulting in sub-cooling. By ensuring a constant supply of refrigerant in the compressor, the compressor's lifespan is extended, and overall system efficiency is improved, and also increases the coefficient of performance of conventional air conditioning system. Due to sub-cooling the refrigerating effect increases. The use of coolant for condenser cooling shows positive response as compared to only cooling by pass refrigerant. By implementing this kind of reforms in the conventional air conditioning system the increase in coefficient of performance and also decrease in the power consumption of the conventional air conditioning system. The average COP improved obtained to be 50 percent. Power consumption is reduced by 20-25 percent.
