India, being a land of diversity has for years witnessed the oppression of subalterns, especially women and people belonging to lower communities. The common people were most often denied or were even unaware of their rights and the benefits of Education. Under such circumstances, the Indian society has almost always witnessed the emergence of the Reformers, who with their consistent efforts have brought about enormous changes in the traditional and superstitious patterns of human life. One such Great Social Reformer who emerged in the State of Maharashtra was Jyotirao Phule, who due to his contributions was elated to the status of a Mahatma by the common people of India. Belonging to a low caste from Maharashtra and being aware of the degraded position of the untouchables and non-Brahmin, he waged a lifelong struggle against upper caste domination and Brahminical supremacy through his Satya Sadhok Samaj. He pioneered the widow remarriage movement and worked for the education of women in Maharashtra. He was believed to be the first Hindu to start an orphanage for the unfortunate children. He devoted his entire life for the liberation of untouchables from the exploitation of Brahmins.
