Abstract
ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the facial nerve palsy in patients with Cerebellopontine angle tumor resection so as to know the incidence of facial disability. This study was done at SVIMS Neurosurgery Outpatient department through retrospectively observing the subjects who underwent the tumor resection .patients were observed and evaluated accordingly. AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence of facial disability in patients with cerebellopontine angle tumor resection. OBJECTIVES The objective of the study was to evaluate the facial paralysis by using House-Brackmann facial grading scale and to evaluate the facial disability through facial disability index questionnaire. METHODOLOGY: Patients who underwent cerebellopontine angle tumour resection during the period of march 2018-december 2021 were initially contacted through telephone and were asked to attend the Neurosurgery outpatient department at SVIMS Tirupati for review. Later the patients whoever visited the Neurosurgery outpatient department for review were observed and evaluated for facial nerve paralysis. Patients who had difficulty to visit for the review were observed and evaluated through virtual mode. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Analysis of the data was done and pie charts were drawn for the percentage obtained for each grade according to HBFGS.(1-6) Both men and women percentage of incidence of facial nerve palsy was represented in separate pie diagrams. Another pie chart diagram represented the percentage of facial disability that was calculated using FDI questionnaire. It indicated the percentages of disability of FDI scores obtained by the patients ranging from (0-100). RESULTS: Results showed that there is a significant incidence of facial disability in patients with CPA tumour resection and there is a need for facial rehabilitation following the resection. CONCLUSION: Results suggest that there is a need for facial rehabilitation following Cerebellopontine angle tumour resection so that facial palsy can be corrected .The facial functioning along with the facial disability Index can be improved as well.
