Due to its potential for rapid progression to complications and mortality in the absence of quick and effective treatment, malaria is a medical emergency. Plasmodium falciparum almost exclusively causes severe malaria. In spite of advancements in critical care and antimalarial treatment, imported malaria is becoming more common and its case fatality rate is still high. For many years, the antimalarial drugs chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) have been used extensively in the management of autoimmune illnesses as well as the treatment and prevention of malaria. CQ and HCQ have broader therapeutic potential as novel mechanisms of action have been discovered in recent years, one of which being the treatment of viral infectious illnesses.
