Abstract
The paper studies the rape cases in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh including the rape of minor girls of age less than 18 years, which is important in view the high rate of crime of rape of minor girls in the state as compared to all-India rate and most of the other states. The paper emphasises the need of appropriate medico-legal initiatives for bringing justice to the victims of rape and more importantly preventive initiatives. The medico-legal aspects need to be strengthened with the revision of textbooks of medical jurisprudence, medical syllabi, and adopting the protocols of medical examination and assessment of rape victims. There are also issues of proper implementation of Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) and utilisation of Nirbhaya Funds. Women who are sexually violated should fight against the common belief that once a woman is raped her dignity is lost and she is reduced to nothing. We must collectively help the victims of rape to regain and restore their moment of dignity after the darkest hours of their lives.
