BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The burden of stroke is increasing in India.Stroke
is the 4th leading cause of death and 5th leading cause of disability in India, whereas the 2nd leading cause of death and disability worldwide. During the past 30 years of time span, the global stroke incidence is increased by 70% and by 43%.Disability adjusted life years
(DALYs)due to stroke increased by 32%. The exposure of people to the potential risk factors for stroke may effect the incidence of stroke. The primary prevention of stroke is essential to control the rapid hike of stroke. By identifying the potential risk factors, it will be helpful in modifying them such that prevents the incidence and prevalence of stroke. This study was conducted to investigate the incidence of stroke, risk factors and their distribution based on stroke subtypes in SVIMS, Tirupati.
OBJECTIVE:
1. To find out the incidence of stroke and its subtypes by retrospection of manual medical records.
2. To find out the risk factors causing the stroke which further helps to bring awareness and to promote risk factor education at community level to prevent the occurrence of stroke by means of manual medical records .
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective hospital based study was conducted
at SVIMS, Tirupati. All medical records with the diagnosis of stroke were identified from January -2015 to December -2020.A master chart for data gathering was used to retrieve data about the demographics, diagnostics and risk factors.
RESULTS: Out of 1252 cases, two-thirds were marked with ischemic stroke whereas haemorrhagic stroke has low incidence with mean ages of 54.9years. The most common risk factors contributing in occurrence of stroke are hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus(DM).The most common risk factors found to contributing in occurrence of stroke are hypertension(HTN) and diabetes mellitus(DM).
CONCLUSION: Ischemic stroke has higher incidence than haemorrhagic stroke with a
3:1 ratio with a male predominance and hypertension was found to be a most common risk factor. Systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, alcoholism, were significantly associated with stroke .Systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, alcoholism, were found to be significantly associated with stroke .
