Abstract
The Area of Panggung Krapyak illustrates Yogyakarta’s authentic urban settlements. It lies in the southern part of the central city axis, representing a part of the philosophy that underlays Yogyakarta's urban spatial planning, namely Sangkan Paraning Dumadi. Although the development of the Area of Panggung Krapyak was not as dynamic as the areas in the center and the northern part of the main city axis, the pressure from urbanization and recent development had potentially degraded the authenticity value of the area. The article tries to reveal the authenticity value of the area as Yogyakarta’s authentic urban settlements in its change and continuity. The research findings show that the area of Panggung Krapyak still shows its identity as Yogyakarta's authentic urban settlement amidst the pressure of change with various adaptations of new functions. Management of change is needed to be carried out carefully so that the value of authenticity can be maintained properly.
