The entire world is now commemorating the development of the communication technology which has made the communication easy to access around the world through social media applications. This advanced form of technology has switched the whole world towards globalization. Social media sites are such applications which people uses as per their convenience for chatting, studying, making new connections or other useful purposes. But as social media applications are a part of technology it can also have both positive and negative sides as of a coin. This paper aims to study the reasons of using social media applications among Higher education students and also its impact on academic performance of the students. Data was collected from 150 Ist year Graduation students of Dayalbagh Educational Institute using self-structured questionnaire. Both primary and secondary sources of data are used in the study. The study concluded with the positive outcome of the social media over the higher education students as the main aim of the students in initiation of social media applications was for education purposes, chatting with friends, remains connected with peers, passing their time etc. Recommendations made under the study were to regulate regular group sessions within the department to make students learn about their time management with their academics work and social media usage. Students must be encouraged to prioritize their academic needs over wastage of time in chatting and uploading videos or status
