Abstract
Abstract Niger annually sows 20.44% of its cultivable area with sorghum. Plant material of this study is made up of four hundred and thirty-two (432) lines of F5 sorghum plants that were developed at Lossa’s Basic Seed Farm (FSBL) and their hybrids. Seedlings were planted at 0.80 m ridge spacing and 0.30 m cluster spacing. The study covered an area of one Hectare. All plants used in this selection are ‘B’ lines. We retained for analysis 150 lines out of the initial 432 sown, i.e. about 35% of initial lines were retained in field for selection process. Thus, 65% of lines were rejected in field on basis of difference in size between pairs of 'A' and 'B' lines. Production of hybrid seed to appropriate technical standards is a key element in increasing crop productivity. To detect potentially interesting lines to pursue with in sorghum hybrid development programs in winter 2018, we based our choices on plant height; panicle length and dry matter weight. We further set minimal size for retention purpose for two (2) criteria that illustrate dual objectives pursued in this sorghum hybrid development. Fist is panicle length of plants set at (≥ 26 cm), and 2nd criterion is dry matter weight set at (≥ 2.5 kg). Based on these two criteria, we have compiled a list of 74 lines that meet the two listed criteria. This list not only contains lines from all cycles, but also considers a large number of lines ranging in size from 81 cm to 205 cm. Keywords: Sorghum bicolor, line, hybrid, male-sterile.
